Thanks to the folks who spent Christmas Eve installing new furnace.

To the editor:

Two days before Christmas, Baystate Gas red-tagged my furnace and told me not to use it anymore due to a carbon monoxide leak. They did not fix it at the time and left me without any heat. My main concern was the health of my daughter and me, and we immediately went to the doctor.

The next day, which was Christmas Eve, I called Baystate Gas and they informed me that due to the holiday they would not be able to help me until Friday and that I would have better luck contacting a local heating company.

I frantically searched the yellow pages only to hear the phrase sorry, due to the holiday, we will be unable to come out until Monday. It was Christmas Eve, I had no heat, I have a young child and Santa was coming.

Finally I called Wilson Plumbing and Heating of Easthampton, and Gary Wilson immediately sent someone to my home to give me an estimate, but could not guarantee that I could have a new furnace installed that day.

Thankfully, by 1:30 in the afternoon, there were two technicians in my basement installing a brand-new furnace. I am grateful to Wilson Plumbing and Heating and especially to Randy and Jim who spent Christmas Eve in my basement so that my daughter would be able to open her presents on Christmas Day at home. -- Sara Sulisz, Easthampton

We bought our new home on a freezing day in January and arrived to find pipes bursting everywhere. Gary's response to our frantic call was immediate. "My wife and I have just recently completed the construction of a new home. This was a very important and large project for the both of us. The home is approximately 3000 square feet with three bathrooms, a Viessman boiler and hot water heater, and radiant heating system in the garage.

I found Gary Wilson and his entire staff to be very professional and honest. Gary provided a detailed written proposal from a set of plans. I found his price quote to be reasonable and after some inquiring of my own I awarded Gary the plumbing, heating and air conditioning contract for my project. This was based on interviews with area contractors and actually viewing work performed by Wilson Plumbing and Heating. All scheduled meetings were met. All telephone messages were answered in a timely fashion.

There were several changes throughout the project and I found Gary and his employees to be flexible and helpful. "After 35 years of living with oil fired steam heat, we decided to replace our heating system. It was a daunting task since, as retirees, we knew that we'd have to live with our choice for the rest of our lives. With that in mind, I interviewed almost every heating contractor in the area. I met with Gary Wilson first because I was impressed by his website. When I called his office to make an appointment, he was in Germany visiting the factories which made the boilers he installs; that made me feel that he was a serious and committed businessman. At our first meeting, Gary was confident that he knew exactly what type of system would make me happy. At that time, I didn't appreciate his approach; but after many interviews with contractors who were willing to install whatever I told them to, I realized the importance of someone having enough knowledge to instruct the homeowner as to what the best type of system would be.

Some of the other heating contractors I met with sent sales reps to sell me a product that some unknown crew would install. I'd never meet the owner unless, of course, I had a complaint; whereas Gary, the owner, was on site supervising an exceptionally talented small crew. They were competent, well organized, very neat and courteous. Quite frankly I hated to see them leave.

Ultimately I chose a Buderus gas fired hot water system with optional computer and panel radiators with individual controls which allow me to regulate the temperature in each room. I am completely satisfied. The house is comfortable and amazingly quiet and odor free for the first time in 35 years.

I got to know Gary and his crew better than most homeowners would because, as a retired shop teacher, I performed the carpentry chores which needed to be done during installation. "Just wanted to let you know that the new Viessmann heating system has exceeded our expectations.  We are using 1/3 the natural gas that we used last year!! You were much too cautious about the expected savings. So far, since early December when it was installed, we have saved $1,375 dollars with the new system (about 4 months of usage).  We have not changed the temperature level in the house other than having a much more even temperature throughout the house.
